Handrails

While people with physical disabilities often require handrails in hallways to steady themselves, people impacted by blindness may use handrails to help navigate or orient them within the built environment. Handrails in hallways can be helpful for people impacted by blindness, but they are not necessary, since wayfinding is often better facilitated through other methods (e.g., by providing colour contrast on the floor surface along the sides of the path of travel). If you plan to use handrails in a hallway, follow the specifications in the main handrails section.
